    L-Theanine is the amino acid responsible for much of the character of green tea — both its umami taste and, arguably, the difference between the feeling of tea and the feeling of coffee. It crosses the blood-brain barrier within about 30 minutes and clears within a few hours, which makes it an acute agent rather than something that accumulates.

    The literature is best read as modest but internally consistent. Trials of single doses at 200-400 mg show reduced subjective stress and lower physiological arousal during a stressor — slower heart rate, lower salivary immunoglobulin A response — alongside increased alpha-wave activity on EEG, the pattern associated with relaxed wakefulness. Trials over four weeks show small improvements in sleep quality and stress-related symptoms in people who were stressed to begin with. What theanine does not do is produce a large anxiolytic effect in diagnosed anxiety disorders; head-to-head it is well below what an SSRI or a benzodiazepine achieves.

    The caffeine combination is the most reliably reproduced finding. At roughly 100 mg caffeine to 200 mg theanine, studies show better sustained attention and fewer self-reported jitters than caffeine alone. This is the basis of most nootropic stack formulations, and it is one of the few supplement combinations with genuinely convergent evidence.

    For sleep, theanine is not a sedative and will not initiate sleep the way melatonin or a hypnotic does. Its usefulness is in lowering pre-sleep arousal — the racing-mind state — which is why it often helps people who cannot switch off rather than people who simply have a late body clock.

    Potential Side Effects

    Very well tolerated. Occasional headache and, rarely, mild nausea or a drop in blood pressure at higher doses. It does not cause drowsiness at typical doses and has not been associated with dependence, withdrawal or tolerance. It is generally recognised as safe in the United States.

    Contraindications

    No established contraindications at typical doses. Safety in pregnancy and lactation has not been studied, so it is generally avoided. Theoretically may add to the effect of blood pressure medication.
