    L-Theanine for Sleep Talking

Sleep talking is usually a benign quirk with no proven supplement treatment — and most cases need no treatment at all.

    How It Works

Somniloquy is a common parasomnia arising from partial arousals, often hereditary and aggravated by stress, sleep deprivation, alcohol, and fever. L-theanine's calming alpha-wave effects have been speculated to reduce arousal intensity, but this has never been studied.

Evidence is insufficient: no trial has tested L-theanine on somniloquy. The studied sleep dose is 200-400 mg before bed and it did not target or reduce parasomnias. Address the usual triggers instead - sleep deprivation, alcohol, fever and stress.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

No trials exist for any supplement in sleep talking. Sleep hygiene, stress reduction, and treating triggers (late alcohol, irregular sleep) are the standard advice. New-onset frequent sleep talking in adults over 50 — especially with vivid dream enactment or physical movements — can be an early sign of REM sleep behavior disorder, which is associated with later neurological disease and deserves evaluation. Sleep talking that disturbs a partner is best addressed with behavioral measures, not pills.

No studies are yet linked to both L-Theanine and Sleep Talking.

    Safety

    Caveats

Sleep talking is usually benign and needs no treatment. New-onset somniloquy with acting-out behaviour warrants assessment for REM sleep behaviour disorder rather than a supplement.
