    How It Works

    L-theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea that crosses the blood-brain barrier and raises alpha-wave activity on EEG - an electrical signature of relaxed but alert attention. It modestly modulates glutamatergic and GABAergic transmission and appears to dampen sympathetic arousal without sedation. In ADHD the theoretical target is not dopaminergic signalling, where stimulant medications act, but the downstream problems of over-arousal and fragmented sleep. That distinction matters: the mechanism predicts better sleep continuity and calmer arousal rather than improvement in inattention or impulsivity themselves.

    What the studies say

    The most cited human data is a small randomised crossover trial in boys aged 8-12 with diagnosed ADHD, in which 400mg daily improved objectively measured sleep efficiency and reduced nocturnal activity, without measured change in daytime ADHD symptoms. Separate work combining L-theanine with caffeine has reported improvements in sustained attention in children with ADHD, but sample sizes are small and replication is limited. No adequately powered trial has shown that L-theanine reduces core ADHD symptoms. Its safety profile is good and it does not interact with stimulant medication in any well-documented way, so it is best framed as a low-risk adjunct aimed at sleep and arousal rather than an ADHD treatment.

    Not a substitute for stimulant or behavioural treatment of ADHD. Safety ceiling: doses above 900 mg/day are unstudied. May add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect of antihypertensives. Not established in pregnancy.
