L-theanine alone at 200 mg increases alpha activity and reduces subjective stress and salivary cortisol responses to acute stressors in controlled studies. A 2019 randomized trial found four weeks of 200 mg daily improved sleep quality, verbal fluency, and executive function scores in stressed adults. Effect sizes are small to moderate, samples are typically small, and no study has measured decision quality across a long decision run — the direct claim remains extrapolation.

    Caveats

    The effect is modest and easily swamped by sleep debt — no amino acid substitutes for seven to nine hours. Pairing with caffeine means inheriting caffeine's constraints: avoid it within eight hours of bedtime, since degrading tonight's sleep costs more decision quality tomorrow than theanine gains today. L-theanine may lower blood pressure slightly, relevant with antihypertensives, and may have additive effects with sedatives. If persistent difficulty deciding comes with low mood or loss of interest, the issue may be depression rather than decision load, and needs proper assessment.

    Less likely to help if

    People whose decision problems stem from sleep deprivation, burnout, depression, or an unmanageable decision volume — those need structural and medical fixes, not a nootropic. Those highly sensitive to caffeine may prefer theanine alone. And anyone expecting a marked, obvious change will likely be disappointed by an effect this subtle.
