    This is the best-supported theanine claim. Randomised placebo-controlled trials show reduced subjective stress and anxiety, along with attenuated salivary cortisol and heart rate responses to acute stressors at 200 mg. A four-week trial at 200 mg/day in healthy adults found improvements in stress-related symptoms, sleep quality and some cognitive measures. The distinguishing feature is anxiolysis without sedation, cognitive impairment, tolerance or dependence, which is a rare profile.
    Effects are modest, and trials are small and mostly conducted in healthy or subclinically stressed people. Theanine is not a treatment for generalised anxiety disorder or panic disorder, and it should not delay proper care for either. Where it fits is everyday stress reactivity and pre-event nerves.

    How It Works

The physiological readouts follow the same pattern: lower salivary cortisol and blunted heart rate rises in response to laboratory stressors, without the psychomotor slowing that benzodiazepines or antihistamines produce.
    A single 200 mg dose acts within an hour and is best used before a known stressor. The four-week trial data suggest a separate, slower benefit on sleep and stress-related symptoms that builds with daily use. Both are legitimate ways to use it, but they answer different questions.
