    L-Theanine for Reaction Time Improvement

    Theanine with caffeine improves attention accuracy and reduces the jittery overshoot that can hurt fine motor timing.

    Overview

    The evidence here is about a combination, not an ingredient. Randomised crossover trials of L-theanine with caffeine report faster reaction times and fewer errors on attention tasks than placebo, and better accuracy than caffeine alone. Caffeine is doing most of the work on raw reaction speed. Theanine appears to reduce the anxiety and motor jitter that generate errors at high arousal, which is why the pairing beats caffeine alone on accuracy rather than on speed.
    Taken without caffeine, theanine does not reliably improve reaction time. It is a relaxant, and in some settings it may slightly slow responses. If you want a faster trigger finger from a single capsule, this is not it. If you want caffeine without the overshoot, it is a sensible addition.

    How It Works

    Theanine crosses the blood-brain barrier and increases EEG alpha activity, the signature of relaxed alertness. It modulates glutamate and GABA signalling, smoothing the arousal curve rather than pushing it in one direction. Reaction time under load is not purely a speed problem. Performance follows an inverted-U against arousal: too little and you are slow, too much and you anticipate, overshoot and make errors. Caffeine raises arousal; theanine appears to keep it on the productive side of the curve.
    The best-studied pairing is roughly 2:1 theanine to caffeine, typically 200 mg theanine with 100 mg caffeine. Below that ratio the caffeine profile dominates; well above it the calming effect can blunt the alerting benefit you were after.

    Green tea supplies only 25-60 mg of theanine per cup alongside its caffeine, well below the studied ratio. If you are aiming for the trial protocol you need a capsule, though tea remains a pleasant way to get a much smaller version of the same pairing.

    Randomised crossover trials in healthy adults show the caffeine-theanine combination improves attention switching, reduces distractibility and lowers error rates relative to caffeine alone, with reaction time improvements over placebo. Effects are measurable but modest, and populations are typically young and healthy. The critical qualification is attribution. Because most trials compare the combination against placebo or against caffeine, the independent contribution of theanine to reaction speed is small and inconsistently demonstrated.     Safety

    Theanine has an excellent safety record. Doses up to 400 mg are well tolerated in trials, with headache and mild drowsiness the occasional complaints. There is no evidence of dependence or withdrawal. Most of the risk in this protocol comes from the caffeine, not the theanine: sleep disruption, palpitations and anxiety in sensitive individuals. Keep caffeine well away from bedtime.

    Not a substitute for sleep

    Sleep deprivation degrades reaction time more than any supplement can restore. If you are chronically underslept, this pairing masks the sensation of impairment without fixing the impairment.

    Do not expect theanine alone to carry this claim. If a product markets reaction-time benefits from theanine without caffeine, the trial evidence does not support that framing. Equally, if you already tolerate caffeine without jitter, the marginal benefit of adding theanine is small.
