    Overview

    Stress resilience is the outcome where L-theanine has its most consistent human evidence. Randomised trials in healthy adults show smaller rises in heart rate and salivary immunoglobulin A during acute stress tasks, and lower self-reported stress and anxiety scores over four weeks of daily use. The effect is real but modest. It changes how sharply the stress response spikes rather than removing the stressor or producing calm on demand.
    It suits people who feel physically activated under pressure: racing heart, tight chest, difficulty settling after a demanding task. It is not a treatment for a diagnosed anxiety disorder, though one adjunctive trial suggests it may add something alongside conventional care. Sample sizes across the literature are small and many outcomes are self-reported, which is why the verdict is likely rather than strong.

    How It Works

    L-theanine crosses the blood-brain barrier through the large neutral amino acid transporter and weakly antagonises NMDA and AMPA glutamate receptors while limiting glutamine transport. Excitatory tone falls, and inhibitory neurotransmission is relatively favoured. EEG studies show increased alpha power within 30 to 60 minutes of 200 mg, a signature of relaxed alertness rather than sedation.
    Downstream, that shift dampens sympathetic activation. Trials measuring heart rate and salivary IgA during arithmetic or speech stressors found blunted responses in the theanine arm, consistent with reduced autonomic reactivity rather than blunted perception of the task. Effects on cortisol are less consistent, so the best-supported description is attenuated acute physiological reactivity rather than wholesale suppression of the stress axis.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Acute stress studies used a single 200 mg dose taken 30 to 60 minutes before the stressor. Daily-use trials gave 200 mg per day for four weeks, and some regimens split 400 mg per day into morning and evening doses. For performance situations, a single dose ahead of time is the studied approach. For general stress load, treat it as a daily supplement and review after four weeks.

    Expect a smaller spike, not calm on demand

    The measurable change is a blunted physiological stress response. If you are waiting to feel obviously relaxed, you will likely miss the effect.

    Safety

    L-theanine is well tolerated at 200 to 400 mg per day, with adverse event rates matching placebo in randomised trials and GRAS status for food use in the United States. Headache and mild dizziness are the occasional complaints. It does not produce tolerance, dependence or withdrawal in the published trials, though data beyond a few months are limited.

    Interactions & Conflicts

    Conflicts are additive rather than metabolic. Alongside sedatives or alcohol, theanine may compound drowsiness; alongside antihypertensives it may lower blood pressure slightly further.
