    The honest summary is that theanine alone does very little for reaction time in rested, healthy people. Where speed improvements appear consistently is in combination with caffeine: the pair improves attention and reaction time on demanding tasks more than either alone, and with fewer unwanted arousal effects. So the practical claim is narrow. Theanine is a modifier of caffeine's cognitive effect and a reducer of stress-related interference, not a standalone speed enhancer.

    How It Works

    Processing speed depends on signal-to-noise: efficient attentional selection with minimal distraction. Theanine raises EEG alpha power, a state associated with reduced internal noise and relaxed focus, and modestly modulates dopamine, which is central to attentional control.
    With caffeine, the mechanisms are complementary rather than additive in the same channel. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors and raises arousal, which speeds responding but at high doses adds jitter and error. Theanine damps the excess arousal without removing the alerting effect, which is the plausible reason combination studies show better accuracy and attention-switching than caffeine alone. Anxiety also slows processing by consuming working memory. To the extent theanine reduces stress, it may recover speed lost to that interference rather than raising a rested baseline.

    Across acute crossover trials, theanine plus caffeine improves speed and accuracy on attention-switching and demanding attention tasks relative to placebo, and often relative to caffeine alone on accuracy measures. Theanine alone shows smaller and less consistent effects, with some studies finding improved attention in anxiety-prone participants and others finding nothing in rested healthy adults. Limitations are substantial: small crossover samples, heterogeneous cognitive batteries, publication bias toward positive findings and frequent industry sponsorship. Effects are acute and modest; no evidence supports lasting gains in processing speed.

    Safety

    Theanine itself is very well tolerated; occasional headache, dizziness or mild stomach upset are the usual reports and it does not impair performance.

    The caffeine half carries the risk

    Keep total caffeine under about 400 mg daily and away from the second half of the day. Palpitations, anxiety or disrupted sleep mean the dose is too high.

    Long-term safety data beyond a few months are limited and there is no adequate evidence in pregnancy or breastfeeding. New or worsening difficulty with thinking speed deserves medical assessment rather than self-treatment, since sleep apnoea, thyroid disease, anaemia, depression and medication effects are common causes.
