Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Processing Speed Improvement

Omega-3 supports long-term brain health but does not measurably speed up processing in healthy adults.

    Overview

Omega-3 supports long-term brain health but does not measurably speed up processing in healthy adults.

    Verdict

    Insufficient evidence

    How It Works

DHA maintains neuronal membrane fluidity and supports white matter integrity.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
    1-2g/day EPA+DHA
    Expected timeframe
    6-12 months

    Protocol

    form
Fish oil or algal oil, DHA-predominant in most cognitive trials
    duration
Trials ran 6 months to several years
    co factor
Evidence is insufficient. Randomised trials measuring specific cognitive domains in healthy adults and older adults have generally found no significant improvement in processing speed with omega-3 supplementation - the large AREDS2 cognitive substudy and several dedicated trials in cognitively healthy older adults were null, and where positive findings appear they are usually in composite scores or in subgroups with low baseline omega-3 status rather than in processing speed specifically. Observational associations between fish intake and slower cognitive decline exist but are confounded. The doses above were used and did not show a reliable benefit for this domain.
    titration
Not applicable - there is no dose shown to improve processing speed
    starting dose
Not established for this outcome. Trials used 1,000-2,000 mg/day EPA+DHA over 6-24 months

    What the studies say

Large trials such as VITAL-COG and the Cochrane review found no cognitive benefit in healthy older adults, though observational data links higher intake with better white matter health.

    Safety

    Caveats

Value is preventive and long-term rather than an acute performance effect.

    Less likely to help if

Everyone - trials did not show a processing speed benefit at the doses studied.
