    L-Theanine for Cortisol Reduction

    L-theanine reduces acute stress reactivity and salivary cortisol without sedation.

    Overview

    L-theanine is best known for producing calm without sedation, and cortisol reduction is the physiological claim usually attached to that experience.
    The subjective effect is well supported: theanine reliably reduces self-reported stress and anxiety during acute stressors and increases alpha wave activity, a signature of relaxed alertness. Several small studies have also reported blunted salivary cortisol responses to laboratory stress tasks. The cortisol evidence specifically is thinner than the calm-inducing evidence. Effects are largely acute and stress-task dependent, sample sizes are small, and there is little to show that theanine lowers baseline or chronically elevated cortisol.

    How It Works

    L-theanine is a glutamate analogue found almost exclusively in tea. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts as a weak antagonist at glutamate receptors while modestly increasing GABA, dopamine and serotonin activity, shifting the balance away from excitatory tone.
    EEG studies show increased alpha band power within 30 to 60 minutes of a 200 mg dose, the pattern associated with wakeful relaxation rather than drowsiness. Cortisol reduction is downstream of this. Perceived threat drives the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis; reducing the subjective stress response should attenuate the cortisol output that follows. This is an indirect route, which fits the observation that theanine blunts stress-evoked cortisol spikes rather than resetting baseline HPA activity.

    Tea alone will not get you there

    A cup of green tea contains roughly 10-25 mg of theanine. Reaching the 200 mg studied dose from tea is impractical.

    Across the wider literature, randomised trials show that 200 mg of theanine reduces subjective stress and anxiety during acute stressors, increases EEG alpha activity, and in several studies attenuates salivary cortisol responses to laboratory stress tasks such as arithmetic challenges. Some four-week trials in stressed adults have reported improvements in stress-related symptoms and sleep quality. The cortisol-specific evidence is limited: few studies, small samples, single-timepoint salivary sampling that is highly variable, and inconsistent results across stress paradigms. Chronic cortisol lowering has not been demonstrated, and salivary cortisol is a noisy endpoint at the best of times.

    Better evidence for feeling calm than for cortisol

    Subjective stress reduction and alpha waves are well supported. Cortisol reduction is an acute, small and inconsistent finding.

    Safety

    L-theanine has an excellent tolerability record. Side effects are uncommon and mild - occasional headache, dizziness or gastrointestinal discomfort - and it does not appear to impair alertness or performance at typical doses.

    Chronic stress needs more than a supplement

    Persistently high stress with poor sleep, low mood or physical symptoms warrants proper assessment. Theanine takes the edge off acute stress; it does not treat anxiety disorders or burnout.

    Long-term safety beyond a few months of study is not well characterised, and there is no adequate data in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Because it can lower blood pressure slightly, people already on antihypertensive medication should be aware of the possible additive effect.
