    Mixed evidence

    Takes the edge off situational anxiety within an hour, with essentially no downside. But the effect is small, and for a diagnosed anxiety disorder it is nowhere near what established treatments achieve.

    How It Works

    Theanine crosses the blood-brain barrier within about 30 minutes and increases alpha-wave power on EEG — the electrophysiological signature of relaxed wakefulness. It modulates glutamatergic transmission through weak binding at AMPA, kainate and NMDA sites, and blunts sympathetic activation, measurable as lower heart rate and reduced salivary immunoglobulin A during a stressor. Unlike a benzodiazepine, it does not act at the GABA-A receptor, which is why it produces calm without impairment or dependence.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

    Acute-dose crossover studies fairly consistently show reduced subjective stress and lower physiological arousal at 200-400 mg during induced stress tasks. A four-week open-label trial in adults with stress-related complaints reported improvements in anxiety and sleep. In diagnosed generalised anxiety disorder the picture is weaker: an eight-week randomised trial of theanine as an adjunct to antidepressant treatment found improved sleep but no significant separation on the primary anxiety measure. The honest summary is a small, reliable acute effect and an unproven chronic one.

    Safety

    Caveats

    This will not carry a moderate or severe anxiety disorder. If anxiety is interfering with work or relationships, theanine is an adjunct at best and should not delay therapy or medication. It may add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect of antihypertensives.

    Less likely to help if

    People with panic disorder or severe GAD, where the effect size is far too small. Also those expecting sedation — theanine deliberately does not sedate.
