Occasional anxiety is a normal stress response; persistent or disproportionate anxiety deserves assessment. Overview
Anxiety as a symptom — rather than a diagnosed disorder — sits on a spectrum from normal stress response to a signal of something medical. It has real physiology: adrenaline, cortisol and an overactive threat-detection system produce the racing heart, tight chest and churning stomach that make anxiety feel physical. Persistent, disproportionate or escalating anxiety deserves proper assessment, because several treatable medical conditions masquerade as it and effective psychological treatment exists for the anxiety itself.

Root Causes
Anxiety arises from an overactive threat system: the amygdala signals danger and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis releases adrenaline and cortisol, producing the physical sensations that then feed back as further perceived threat. This loop is amplified by poor sleep, caffeine, alcohol withdrawal and low blood sugar, all of which produce adrenaline surges that feel identical to psychological anxiety. Low magnesium status increases neuronal excitability and HPA-axis reactivity; chronic stress in turn depletes magnesium. GABA signalling is the brain's main braking system, and most effective anxiolytics — and several supplements — work by supporting it.

Lavender
Strong evidence for the standardised Silexan preparation specifically. Comparable to active drug comparators in head-to-head trials, with a far better tolerability profile.
Kava Kava
Kava beats placebo for anxiety in Cochrane review, without dependence or cognitive impairment. The liver risk is real but appears tied to solvent extracts and non-root plant parts.
Skullcap
Traditional use plus one tiny human study is not enough to recommend skullcap for anxiety over better-evidenced options.
Chamomile
Genuine randomised support for mild-to-moderate anxiety, from a small evidence base — a reasonable first-line botanical, not a substitute for treating severe anxiety.
Ashwagandha
Meaningful reductions in self-reported anxiety across several small RCTs at 300-600 mg/day, appearing within 6-8 weeks.
L-Theanine
Takes the edge off situational anxiety within an hour, with essentially no downside. But the effect is small, and for a diagnosed anxiety disorder it is nowhere near what established treatments achieve.
Magnesium
Small anxiety improvements in trials, with the clearest signal in people who are magnesium-depleted or have premenstrual anxiety.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
A modest anxiolytic signal at high EPA doses above 2 g/day in clinical populations; effects in mild everyday anxiety are small and inconsistent.
B-Complex Vitamins
B-complex does not treat anxiety in people with normal B-vitamin status. It helps only where deficiency (B12, folate, B6) is part of the picture.

Blood sugar stability matters: regular meals with protein and fibre prevent the glucose dips that trigger adrenaline surges mistaken for anxiety. Caffeine is the single most impactful dietary factor for many people — trials of complete caffeine removal show measurable anxiety reduction in sensitive individuals. Alcohol worsens anxiety through rebound withdrawal even at moderate intake.
