- Evidence is insufficient. Autophagy is genuinely important for stem cell maintenance - it clears damaged mitochondria and preserves the quiescent state, and impaired autophagy accelerates stem cell exhaustion, one of the recognised hallmarks of ageing. Spermidine improves haematopoietic and muscle stem cell function in aged mice through autophagy induction, which is a real finding. No human study has assessed stem cell number, function or exhaustion after spermidine supplementation, because doing so requires bone marrow or tissue sampling and specialised flow cytometry, and no clinical measure of stem cell health exists.
