    How It Works

    Tyrosine hydroxylase is normally saturated, so extra substrate is inert. Under sustained high neuronal firing, catecholamine synthesis becomes substrate-limited, and supplemental tyrosine sustains dopamine and noradrenaline output in prefrontal circuits that support working memory and attention.

    What the studies say

    The military-derived literature is the strongest part of the evidence: randomised crossover studies show tyrosine at 100-150 mg/kg attenuates decrements in working memory, vigilance and multitasking during cold exposure, continuous operations with sleep deprivation, and loud intermittent noise. Laboratory studies extend this to acute high cognitive load, where tyrosine improves performance on demanding N-back and task-switching paradigms. Trials in rested, unstressed participants consistently find no benefit, which is exactly what the saturated-enzyme mechanism predicts. A further layer of nuance comes from work showing an inverted-U relationship with baseline dopamine function: people with lower dopamine capacity gain most, and those already near optimum may perform slightly worse. Effects are acute and dose-dependent rather than cumulative, so daily dosing has no established rationale.

    Caveats

    No benefit in rested, unstressed conditions, which is how most people take it. Higher-dose research protocols use 100-150 mg/kg, far above typical capsule doses. May slightly impair performance in people already at optimal dopamine function. Contraindicated with MAOIs.

    People who are well rested and unstressed, those taking it with a protein meal, anyone expecting a stimulant-like effect, and people on MAOI antidepressants
