    Take before bed, not in the morning - this is the key practical point, because the cognitive benefit is downstream of sleep, not a direct nootropic effect. Evidence is mixed. The trials that support this gave 3 g glycine before bed to sleep-restricted or poor-sleeping participants and found improved next-day performance on psychomotor vigilance and recognition memory tasks, alongside reduced daytime sleepiness. That is a real finding, but it is a sleep effect measured the following day, and it was seen in people whose sleep was poor. No trial has shown glycine improves cognition in well-rested people, and taking it during the day is more likely to cause drowsiness than clarity.

    What the studies say

    Trials measuring next-day fatigue and psychomotor performance after nightly glycine show improvement in sleep-restricted participants. No study demonstrates cognitive enhancement in well-rested adults.

    Caveats

    Brain fog usually has a findable cause: poor or apnoeic sleep, anaemia, hypothyroidism, B12 or iron deficiency, depression, chronic stress, alcohol, perimenopause, long COVID or medication effects. Working through those is more productive than a supplement, and untreated sleep apnoea in particular needs diagnosis - sedating anything makes it worse. Safety: glycine has no established upper intake level; above 3 g nausea and loose stools are common. It is sedating, so do not take it before driving or operating machinery, and use caution with alcohol, benzodiazepines, z-drugs and other sedatives. Use caution with clozapine, whose efficacy glycine has been shown to reduce - relevant because glycine has been trialled in schizophrenia with mixed results. No adequate safety data in pregnancy or breastfeeding - avoid in both, and in children without paediatric advice.
