    The evidence points against benefit. Tyrosine is a dopamine precursor and dopamine underlies reward processing, so the theory is superficially attractive - but it has been tested. Trials of tyrosine for depression, including in patients selected for low dopaminergic function, have not shown antidepressant benefit, and studies in healthy volunteers show no improvement in mood or reward sensitivity. The reason is mechanistic: dopamine synthesis is rate-limited by tyrosine hydroxylase, which is saturated at normal dietary tyrosine levels, so extra substrate does not increase release under ordinary conditions. Tyrosine helps only when catecholamines are actively depleted by acute stress. Anhedonia in depression involves receptor sensitivity and circuit-level changes that precursor loading does not touch.
