    Overview

    L-tyrosine is the amino acid precursor to dopamine and noradrenaline. A systematic review of its effects on catecholamine synthesis found it supported noradrenaline and dopamine production under acute stress, but did not alter catecholamine function under normal conditions.
    That conditional pattern is the whole story of this supplement. Tyrosine is a substrate, not a stimulant. When demand is high enough to deplete the pool, adding substrate helps; when it is not, adding substrate changes nothing because the rate-limiting enzyme is already saturated. The practical read is that tyrosine restores noradrenergic capacity under acute stressors such as cold, sleep deprivation, noise or heavy cognitive load, rather than raising baseline levels in a rested person.

    How It Works

    Tyrosine is hydroxylated by tyrosine hydroxylase to L-DOPA, then converted to dopamine and onward to noradrenaline by dopamine beta-hydroxylase. Tyrosine hydroxylase is the rate-limiting step and is normally saturated with substrate.
    That saturation explains the null result at rest. Under sustained sympathetic activation, however, firing rates rise, end-product inhibition on the enzyme lifts, and neuronal tyrosine can become locally limiting. Supplying more substrate then translates into more transmitter. Tyrosine also competes with other large neutral amino acids for transport across the blood-brain barrier, which is why it is usually taken away from protein meals.
