A 2018 meta-analysis by Waldron and colleagues found a small but significant improvement in endurance performance with acute taurine ingestion of 1-6 g, and separate work suggests reduced muscle damage markers and soreness after eccentric exercise. Against this, effects on strength, power and sprint performance are inconsistent or absent, doses and timing vary widely across trials, and many studies are small crossover designs in trained young men. Proposed mechanisms include improved calcium handling in muscle, membrane stabilisation and reduced oxidative damage.

Caveats
The effect size is small and clearest for endurance rather than strength or power, and the supplements with substantially stronger performance evidence are creatine monohydrate at 3-5 g/day, caffeine at 3-6 mg/kg, and beta-alanine at 3-6 g/day for high-intensity efforts of 1-4 minutes. Training programming, sleep, and adequate energy and protein intake matter far more than any of them. Safety of taurine: it is among the best tolerated supplements, with no serious adverse effects at doses up to 3 g/day sustained and 6 g/day short term, and EFSA has considered 6 g/day tolerable. Diarrhoea and nausea occur at high doses. It has modest blood-pressure-lowering effects, relevant if you take antihypertensives, and may enhance lithium effects. Caution applies in significant kidney impairment. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding beyond dietary amounts is not established. Do not take it via energy drinks, where the caffeine and sugar drive the effects and the cardiovascular load is different. Competitive athletes should check third-party certification such as Informed Sport for contamination.
