Taurine is not a classical antioxidant - it does not scavenge most free radicals directly - but it acts through related routes: it forms taurine chloramine, which dampens neutrophil oxidative bursts and inflammatory signalling, it stabilises mitochondrial protein translation via tRNA modification, reducing superoxide leak, and it protects membranes. Human trials report reduced malondialdehyde and improved antioxidant enzyme activity in some populations, particularly in diabetes, heart failure and after intense exercise, but results are inconsistent and endpoints are surrogates.

    Human trials report reduced malondialdehyde and improved antioxidant enzyme activity, particularly in diabetes and after exercise. Clinical outcome data tied to these changes are absent.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Antioxidant marker changes are surrogates, and the field history is a caution: large trials of direct antioxidants produced null or harmful results, including increased lung cancer with beta-carotene in smokers and increased mortality with high-dose vitamin E. Taurine mechanism differs, working through mitochondrial function and inflammatory modulation rather than radical scavenging, and it has more interesting evidence for heart failure and blood pressure than for oxidative markers. Safety of taurine: it is among the better tolerated supplements, with no serious adverse effects reported at doses up to 3 g/day sustained and 6 g/day short term, and the European Food Safety Authority has considered 6 g/day tolerable. Diarrhoea and nausea occur at high doses. It may have modest blood-pressure-lowering effects, relevant if you take antihypertensives, and it may enhance the effect of lithium. Caution applies in significant kidney impairment, where clearance is reduced. Safety data in pregnancy and breastfeeding are limited, so stay within dietary amounts. Note that energy drinks contain taurine alongside high caffeine, and the caffeine drives most of their cardiovascular effects.
