    Overview

    Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is not incorporated into protein. It is the most abundant free amino acid in heart muscle, retina, leukocytes and skeletal muscle, and it is synthesised from cysteine — though at rates low enough that dietary intake matters, particularly for vegans, whose plasma and urinary taurine are consistently lower.

    It has more solid human evidence than its low price and energy-drink association suggest. Meta-analyses show meaningful reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure at around 1.5-3 g/day. In heart failure, trials show improved exercise capacity and ejection fraction, and taurine is used therapeutically for this in Japan. Exercise trials show small but consistent improvements in endurance and reductions in muscle damage markers. There are also credible data for insulin sensitivity and for hepatic fat in NAFLD.

    Its mechanisms are broad rather than specific: osmoregulation, calcium handling in cardiac and skeletal muscle, membrane stabilisation, conjugation of bile acids, and modulation of GABA-A and glycine receptors, which explains the mild calming effect many people report. A 2023 mouse study showing lifespan extension generated considerable attention, but human longevity data do not exist. Safety is excellent — the EFSA observed safe level is 6 g/day and no consistent adverse effects appear at that intake.
