    L-Citrulline for Enhanced Athletic Performance

    Popular as a pump and performance aid; measured effects are small and inconsistent.

    Overview

    L-citrulline works through nitric oxide, and the best-quantified evidence for that pathway in exercise comes from nitrate research. A meta-analysis of beetroot juice found raised plasma nitrite and a moderate improvement in time-to-exhaustion, with little effect on time-trial performance in trained athletes.
    That study is about nitrate rather than citrulline, so treat it as pathway evidence rather than a direct test of this supplement. What it establishes is the shape of the effect: nitric oxide enhancement extends how long you can sustain work, and does much less for athletes already performing near their ceiling. Citrulline's own literature is consistent with that shape, typically showing more repetitions to failure and lower perceived soreness rather than higher peak power. Expect a modest gain in work volume, not a transformation.

    How It Works

    Citrulline is converted in the kidneys to arginine, the substrate for nitric oxide synthase. Counterintuitively, oral citrulline raises plasma arginine more effectively than oral arginine does, because arginine is largely destroyed by intestinal arginase before it reaches circulation.
    More nitric oxide means vasodilation, improved blood flow and better oxygen and substrate delivery to working muscle, which is the same end point that dietary nitrate reaches by a different route. Citrulline additionally supports the urea cycle, helping clear ammonia generated during intense work. Both mechanisms favour sustained submaximal effort over single maximal efforts, which is why the reliable findings are in reps-to-failure and time-to-exhaustion rather than in peak strength or sprint power.

    Safety

    Citrulline is among the best-tolerated ergogenic supplements. Unlike high-dose arginine, it rarely causes gastrointestinal upset, and trials at 6 to 8 g report few adverse effects.
