- Take with food, never fasted. Metabolic optimisation is a marketing category rather than a measurable endpoint, so judge it by its components. Across those, green tea catechins produce consistently small effects: around 1-1.5 kg extra weight loss over 12 weeks, LDL reductions of 0.1-0.2 mmol/L, modest and inconsistent improvements in fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity, and a resting energy expenditure increase worth perhaps 60-100 kcal/day. Observational data associating green tea drinking with lower metabolic syndrome prevalence are confounded by overall diet and lifestyle. Every one of these effects is dwarfed by weight loss, resistance training and sleep.

Caveats
Safety ceiling: EFSA identified 800 mg/day or more of EGCG from supplements as associated with hepatotoxicity, with cases of acute liver injury including some requiring transplantation, and risk is highest with concentrated extracts taken on an empty stomach - a relevant hazard because metabolic and weight-loss products often advise fasted dosing. Stop immediately for nausea, abdominal pain, dark urine, pale stools or jaundice, and avoid with liver disease, fatty liver under investigation, or other hepatotoxic drugs. Caffeine content can raise blood pressure and cause palpitations and insomnia - do not stack with other stimulants. Green tea reduces iron absorption (separate by two hours), reduces the efficacy of nadolol, atenolol and bortezomib, interacts with warfarin via vitamin K, and has antiplatelet activity. In pregnancy keep caffeine below 200 mg/day; high catechin intake may impair folate metabolism.
