Meta-analyses of green tea catechins for weight loss find average reductions of around 1-1.5 kg over 12 weeks versus placebo, with some trials reporting preferential reductions in visceral fat and waist circumference, and effects appear larger in Asian populations and in people with lower habitual caffeine intake. The mechanism - EGCG inhibiting catechol-O-methyltransferase, prolonging noradrenaline action and modestly raising energy expenditure and fat oxidation - is real but small, worth perhaps 60-100 kcal/day. Spot reduction of abdominal fat does not occur; visceral fat responds to overall energy deficit and exercise.

    Rare hepatotoxicity — take with food, avoid high doses on empty stomach. Contains caffeine unless decaffeinated.

    Less likely to help if

    People not in a calorie deficit, and habitual heavy caffeine consumers, in whom trials show the least effect.
