    Overview

    Green tea extract is a concentrated preparation of Camellia sinensis catechins, of which epigallocatechin gallate accounts for roughly half. EGCG is one of the most studied polyphenols in existence, with a mechanistic reach that spans catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibition, AMPK activation, Nrf2-driven antioxidant gene expression, and inhibition of amyloid aggregation.

    The metabolic promise is real but small. By inhibiting COMT, EGCG slows the breakdown of noradrenaline, which prolongs the thermogenic and lipolytic signal — the reason green tea catechins are almost always combined with caffeine in trials. Meta-analyses of the combination show weight loss of roughly one to two kilograms over twelve weeks, an honest but unremarkable effect that is smaller in habitual caffeine consumers. Effects on fasting glucose, LDL and blood pressure are similarly modest but consistent.

    The neuroprotective and cardiovascular observational data are more compelling than the supplement trials, and largely come from populations drinking several cups a day rather than taking capsules. That distinction matters for safety too. Brewed green tea has an excellent record, but concentrated extracts taken on an empty stomach have caused idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity, prompting EFSA to flag doses of 800 mg EGCG/day or more. Take extract with food, stay under that threshold, and stop immediately if jaundice, dark urine or unexplained fatigue appear.

    Safety Information

    Potential Side Effects

    Generally safe but high doses can cause liver issues in rare cases. Take with food to reduce GI upset. Contains caffeine (less than coffee) - avoid late in day if sensitive. Typical dose 250-500mg EGCG daily. Do not exceed 800mg EGCG daily. Iron absorption may be reduced - space doses apart.

    Contraindications

    Existing liver disease or raised transaminases, concurrent hepatotoxic drugs, pregnancy at high doses, and untreated iron deficiency anaemia.
