    How It Works

    EGCG inhibits catechol-O-methyltransferase, prolonging noradrenaline signalling at beta-adrenergic receptors on brown adipocytes, which upregulates uncoupling protein 1 and thermogenesis. Caffeine potentiates this synergistically.

    Take with food, never fasted. Evidence is mixed and largely indirect. In rodents, green tea catechins increase uncoupling protein 1 expression in brown adipose tissue and raise thermogenesis, and the proposed human mechanism - EGCG inhibiting catechol-O-methyltransferase so noradrenaline persists longer at beta-adrenergic receptors on brown fat - is coherent. Human data are thin: a small number of studies using PET-CT or infrared thermography report modest increases in brown fat activity or supraclavicular temperature after catechin ingestion, but samples are tiny, methods vary, and brown fat mass in adults is small and highly variable, being greater in younger, leaner people and in winter. Cold exposure remains the only reliable activator.

    What the studies say

    Controlled metabolic-chamber studies show green tea extract with caffeine raises 24-hour energy expenditure by roughly 3-4 percent, around 80-100 kcal/day, with increased fat oxidation. Meta-analyses of weight-loss trials find average losses of about 1 kg over 12 weeks — statistically detectable but clinically marginal, and smaller in habitual caffeine consumers. High-dose concentrated extracts carry a documented risk of hepatotoxicity, so stay within recommended amounts and take with food.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Safety ceiling: EFSA identified 800 mg/day or more of EGCG from supplements as associated with hepatotoxicity, with cases of acute liver injury including some requiring transplantation - risk is highest with concentrated extracts taken on an empty stomach. Stop immediately and seek medical advice for nausea, abdominal pain, dark urine, pale stools or jaundice, and avoid with existing liver disease or other hepatotoxic drugs. Caffeine-containing combinations can cause palpitations, anxiety, insomnia and raised blood pressure; do not stack with other stimulants. Green tea reduces iron absorption - separate from iron supplements by two hours. It reduces the efficacy of nadolol, atenolol and bortezomib, interacts with warfarin through vitamin K content, and has antiplatelet activity. In pregnancy keep caffeine below 200 mg/day and note that high catechin intake may impair folate metabolism.
