    Overview

    Astaxanthin is the pigment that makes salmon, shrimp and flamingos pink, produced commercially from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. Its molecular structure spans the cell membrane with polar groups at each end, which is why it is often described as positioned to protect both the membrane interior and its surfaces. Marketing claims about being "6000 times stronger than vitamin C" come from a single in-vitro singlet-oxygen assay and should not be read as a clinical statement.

    The most consistent human findings are dermatological. Trials at 4-12 mg/day over 8-16 weeks report improved skin elasticity and moisture and reduced wrinkle depth, and a small trial found increased minimum erythemal dose, meaning slightly more UV tolerance. Second is eye fatigue: several Japanese trials at 6 mg/day found reduced accommodative strain in screen workers.

    Beyond that, results thin out. Trials in athletes are mixed, with some showing improved fat oxidation or reduced muscle damage and others null. Lipid effects are small. Astaxanthin is safe and pleasant to use; it is simply not the cure-all its marketing suggests.

    Very well tolerated. High doses can give stools an orange tint and, rarely, a faint skin tint. Occasional mild stomach upset.

    Contraindications

    No serious contraindications. Mild blood-pressure lowering and possible 5-alpha-reductase inhibition mean caution alongside antihypertensive or hormonal therapy.
