Outcome
    Moderate Evidence

Biotin (Vitamin B7) for Skin Health Enhancement

Biotin for skin and nails is popular but supported almost entirely by deficiency case series, not controlled trials.

    Overview

Biotin for skin and nails is popular but supported almost entirely by deficiency case series, not controlled trials.

    Verdict

    Insufficient evidence

    How It Works

Biotin-dependent carboxylases support fatty acid synthesis required for epidermal barrier lipids and keratin production.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
    Not recommended without documented deficiency
    Expected timeframe
    Not established outside deficiency

    Protocol

    studied dose
2,500-10,000 mcg/day in small uncontrolled nail and skin studies
    evidence note
Verdict is insufficient - the supporting studies are small and uncontrolled
    what happened
Small uncontrolled studies reported thicker nails with biotin, but no randomised trial supports use for skin in people with normal biotin status
    if you still trial it
2.5 mg/day for 3-6 months, with photographs at baseline, and stop it 3 days before any blood test
    what actually has evidence
Sunscreen, topical retinoids and collagen peptides for skin quality; treat any underlying dermatological condition directly

    Evidence

    What the studies say

Small uncontrolled studies reported thicker nails with biotin, but no randomised trial supports use in people with normal biotin status.

No studies are yet linked to both Biotin (Vitamin B7) and Skin Health Enhancement.

    Safety

    Caveats

Biotin interferes with immunoassays - falsely low TSH, falsely high free T4 and falsely low troponin. Stop at least 72 hours before any blood test and tell your clinician. Uncontrolled studies routinely overstate cosmetic benefit. Standard doses are safe in pregnancy; megadoses are not established.

    Less likely to help if

Biotin-replete adults, and anyone with an untreated skin condition such as eczema, acne or rosacea.
