    Take with food. Evidence is mixed and thin. Silicon is involved in collagen synthesis as a cofactor for prolyl hydroxylase, and is present in connective tissue, which is the mechanistic basis. The main clinical support is a single randomised placebo-controlled trial by Barel and colleagues in 50 women with photodamaged skin, where ch-OSA at 10 mg/day of silicon over 20 weeks improved skin roughness and elasticity measurements and nail and hair brittleness. This is one small industry-linked trial, not replicated, and other silica forms have not been shown to be absorbed adequately.

    What the studies say

    A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (n=50) of 10 mg/day ch-OSA in photoaged women found significant improvements in skin surface roughness and elasticity, plus reduced hair and nail brittleness, over 20 weeks. Follow-up work by the same group showed improved hair tensile strength. The evidence is consistent but comes largely from one research group with product ties; independent replication is lacking.

    No studies are yet linked to both Silica and Skin Health Enhancement.

    Safety

    Caveats

    One small unreplicated industry-linked trial is a thin evidence base, and form matters greatly: horsetail and bamboo silica are poorly absorbed, so results from choline-stabilised orthosilicic acid should not be assumed to transfer. The interventions with strong skin evidence are daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, not smoking, topical retinoids, and adequate sleep and nutrition - photoprotection in particular does more for skin ageing than any oral supplement. Safety of silicon: dietary silicon from whole grains, beer and vegetables is safe and there is no established tolerable upper intake level, with excess excreted renally. Caution applies in kidney impairment, where excretion is reduced. Horsetail specifically carries additional concerns: it contains thiaminase, which can degrade thiamine and cause deficiency with prolonged use, may contain nicotine, and has diuretic effects - avoid it in pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney disease and alcohol use disorder. Safety of concentrated silica supplements in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established. New or changing skin lesions, non-healing sores or rapidly changing moles need medical assessment rather than cosmetic supplementation.
