Lactobacillus Gasseri for Weight Loss Support

    L. gasseri produced small visceral fat reductions in East Asian trials, but the effect was modest, reversed after stopping and has not replicated widely.

    Overview

    L. gasseri produced small visceral fat reductions in East Asian trials, but the effect was modest, reversed after stopping and has not replicated widely.

    Verdict

    Mixed evidence

A marginal nudge at best. Real, measurable, and far smaller than any dietary change worth making.

    How It Works

    L. gasseri reduces dietary fat absorption and increases faecal fat excretion, alters bile-salt hydrolase activity, and lowers low-grade inflammatory signalling in adipose tissue.

    Evidence

    What the studies say

The headline result is a 12-week randomized trial of strain SBT2055 in 210 Japanese adults with elevated visceral fat: roughly an 8% reduction in visceral fat area versus control, with about 1 kg of body weight and 1-2 cm of waist circumference. A follow-up phase found the benefit disappeared within four weeks of discontinuation. Korean trials of BNR17 report the same direction and magnitude. Independent replication outside East Asian cohorts is scarce, and several probiotic weight-loss meta-analyses find pooled effects that are statistically detectable but clinically trivial. Honest negative: nothing here supports probiotics as a weight-loss strategy on their own - the trials paired supplementation with stable diets and still landed around 1 kg.

Body weight and BMI did not differ significantly from placebo; only waist and hip circumference showed small reductions in the high-dose group.

    Safety

    Caveats

Benefits reverse within about four weeks of stopping. Effect sizes are small enough to be lost in normal weight fluctuation.

    Less likely to help if

People not controlling diet saw no benefit; non-East-Asian cohorts remain largely untested.
