    TL;DR

    Phase I detox is the cytochrome P450 step that converts toxins into reactive intermediates. Speeding it up without matching Phase II conjugation makes things worse, not better. Nobody needs a "detox cleanse" — they need cruciferous vegetables, adequate protein, and less alcohol.

    Why It Matters

    Phase I biotransformation uses CYP450 enzymes to oxidise fat-soluble compounds — drugs, alcohol, pollutants, hormones — into intermediates that Phase II then conjugates for excretion. The intermediates are often more reactive than the parent compound, so upregulating Phase I in isolation increases oxidative burden. This is also the pathway behind most drug interactions: grapefruit inhibits CYP3A4, St. John's wort induces it, and either can dangerously change medication levels.

    Optimization Protocol

    1) Stop or reduce alcohol — the single largest modifiable load on hepatic biotransformation. 2) Eat cruciferous vegetables regularly; indole-3-carbinol and sulforaphane modulate CYP enzymes and strongly induce Phase II. 3) Keep protein intake adequate (1.2-1.6 g/kg) since conjugation depends on amino acid supply, particularly glycine, cysteine and glutamine. 4) Never push Phase I inducers without Phase II support; balance matters more than speed. 5) Review medications and supplements for CYP interactions before adding anything. 6) Skip commercial "cleanses" — no controlled evidence supports them.
