Randomized crossover controlled feeding trial; four 2-week diets (basal, single-dose cruciferous, double-dose cruciferous, cruciferous plus apiaceous); CYP1A2 activity by urinary caffeine test
Key Findings
Single-dose cruciferous diet increased CYP1A2 activity versus basal (P<0.0001) and the double dose produced further increases (P<0.0001); apiaceous vegetables attenuated induction, and responses varied by genotype and sex.
Conclusions
Cruciferous vegetable intake induces phase I CYP1A2 activity in a dose-dependent manner, modifiable by other dietary constituents and genotype.
Limitations
Controlled feeding setting, modest sample, caffeine probe reflects CYP1A2 only.
Outcomes Measured
Compared with basal diet, the 1C diet increased CYP1A2 activity (P < 0.0001) and the 2C diet resulted in further increases (P < 0.0001)
