    Evidence is insufficient, and the framing inverts the pharmacology. Phase I metabolism, largely cytochrome P450 enzymes, converts compounds into intermediates that are frequently more reactive and more toxic than the parent substance - paracetamol hepatotoxicity is the classic example, where the phase I metabolite causes the damage. Supporting or upregulating phase I in isolation is therefore not obviously desirable. What silymarin actually does in human studies is modestly inhibit certain CYP enzymes, notably CYP2C9, and affect P-glycoprotein - which is a drug interaction concern rather than detox support. There is no human trial demonstrating that milk thistle improves phase I function or clearance of any real-world toxin, and detoxification as marketed is not a measurable physiological outcome.

    What the studies say

    Trials in alcoholic and viral liver disease show inconsistent effects on liver enzymes and no mortality benefit in Cochrane review. Evidence for enhancing detoxification pathways in healthy adults is essentially absent.

    Can mildly inhibit CYP2C9 and affect some medications. Avoid if allergic to the daisy family.
