    Tongkat Ali for Libido Enhancement

    Tongkat ali has the best human trial evidence for libido, improving sexual well-being and testosterone in stressed and aging men.

    Overview

    Tongkat ali is one of the few libido supplements where the trial evidence roughly matches the marketing - though the trials are small and mostly on one branded extract.
    Randomised placebo-controlled studies of standardised water extract at 200-400 mg daily report improved scores on sexual function and libido questionnaires in men, alongside modest increases in total and free testosterone, particularly in men who were stressed, older or had low baseline levels. A separate trial in men with late-onset hypogonadism found improved erectile function and sexual wellbeing. Effects appear over weeks rather than acutely, and the testosterone increases are modest - typically restoring the lower end of normal rather than producing supraphysiological levels. Men with clinically low testosterone need proper endocrine assessment, not a botanical.

    How It Works

    Libido depends on androgen signalling, dopaminergic drive, and the absence of the stress and fatigue that suppress both. Cortisol and testosterone are reciprocally related, and chronic stress lowers libido partly through this axis.
    Eurycomanone and related quassinoids appear to increase free testosterone by displacing it from sex hormone binding globulin and by supporting Leydig cell steroidogenesis, with some evidence of reduced aromatase activity. A stress-related mechanism is also documented: a trial in moderately stressed adults found reduced cortisol and improved testosterone-to-cortisol ratio. That combination - slightly more free androgen and slightly less cortisol - is a plausible route to improved desire without any direct action on erectile vasculature.

    Adulteration is a documented problem

Reviews generally rank it among the better-supported botanical options for male sexual function. The qualifications are significant: samples are typically thirty to one hundred participants, trials run four to twelve weeks, much of the work involves a single branded extract with manufacturer involvement, endpoints are self-reported questionnaires prone to placebo response, evidence in women is minimal, and long-term safety and efficacy data do not exist.

    Safety

    Standardised extract is generally well tolerated at 200-400 mg daily over the studied periods. Insomnia, restlessness, irritability and mild digestive upset are the commonest complaints, and are reduced by taking it in the morning.

    Avoid with hormone-sensitive cancers

    Because it may raise free testosterone, avoid in prostate cancer or other androgen-sensitive conditions, and in men with severe benign prostatic hyperplasia, without specialist advice.

    Loss of libido frequently has a treatable cause - depression, thyroid disease, medication including SSRIs and beta-blockers, sleep apnoea, alcohol, or genuine hypogonadism - and deserves assessment rather than supplementation alone. Mercury contamination has been documented in Malaysian market samples, and safety in pregnancy, breastfeeding and liver or kidney disease is unestablished.
