- Evidence is insufficient. Cell culture work shows resveratrol can influence telomerase activity, though in both directions depending on cell type and concentration - it has been reported to activate telomerase in endothelial cells and to inhibit it in cancer cells, the latter being part of its proposed anticancer mechanism. No human trial has measured leukocyte telomere length or telomerase activity before and after resveratrol supplementation. Telomere length is also a problematic target: it is highly variable between individuals and assays, its shortening is a marker of replicative history rather than a modifiable cause of aging, and telomerase activation carries theoretical cancer risk.
