    Take with a meal. Evidence is mixed, and the common claim is misleading. B vitamins - thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, B6, biotin and B12 - are cofactors in the reactions that release energy from food, and deficiency in any of them causes fatigue. But they contain no energy themselves, and supplying more than the body needs does not accelerate metabolism. Randomised trials of multivitamins in well-nourished people generally show no improvement in subjective energy or vitality, though some report small effects on fatigue and mood in specific populations. Where supplementation clearly helps is in correcting an actual deficiency - iron, B12 or vitamin D deficiency all cause genuine fatigue that resolves on treatment, and that is a diagnosis to make rather than guess.

    What the studies say

    Trials show fatigue improvement where a deficiency exists, particularly iron and B12. Placebo-controlled studies in replete adults find no meaningful change in subjective energy.

    Safety

    Caveats

    Persistent fatigue deserves investigation rather than supplementation: iron deficiency, B12 or folate deficiency, hypothyroidism, diabetes, sleep apnoea, depression, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease and medication effects are all common and testable. Fatigue with weight loss, night sweats, breathlessness or lymph node swelling needs prompt medical review. Sleep, physical activity and reduced alcohol do more for energy than any supplement. Safety ceilings: vitamin A retinol above 3,000 mcg/day is teratogenic and increases fracture risk; vitamin D above 100 mcg (4,000 IU)/day; vitamin B6 above 100 mg/day causes peripheral neuropathy, and high-dose B-complex energy products frequently exceed this - check the label; niacin at high doses causes flushing and liver toxicity; iron above 45 mg/day is toxic and dangerous in haemochromatosis; zinc above 40 mg/day causes copper deficiency; selenium above 400 mcg/day is toxic. High-dose biotin, common in energy and beauty products, interferes with laboratory immunoassays including troponin and thyroid tests and has caused serious misdiagnosis - tell your doctor if you take it. Beta-carotene increased lung cancer risk in smokers. Use a pregnancy-specific formulation in pregnancy. Store iron-containing products away from children.
