    Supplementation raises plasma CoQ10 reliably, but the practical energy benefit is largest in people who start low: older adults, statin users, and those with fatigue-associated conditions. In healthy, well-nourished people the subjective effect is usually modest.

    CoQ10 is a lipid-soluble electron carrier embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It accepts electrons from NADH and succinate dehydrogenase and transfers them to cytochrome c, driving the proton gradient that powers ATP synthase.

    Its reduced form, ubiquinol, is also a membrane antioxidant that protects mitochondrial lipids from peroxidation and regenerates vitamin E. Statins suppress the mevalonate pathway shared by cholesterol and CoQ10 synthesis, which is why statin users show measurable depletion.

    Safety profile

    CoQ10 is well tolerated across doses up to 1200 mg/day in trials. The most common complaints are mild gastrointestinal upset, nausea, and occasional insomnia when taken late in the day.
