- Evidence is insufficient, and the better-quality data are negative. An open-label pilot study in breast cancer survivors using magnesium oxide at 400-800 mg/day reported substantial reductions in hot flush frequency, which generated considerable interest. A subsequent randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in the same population found no significant difference between magnesium and placebo - a classic illustration of how large the placebo response is for vasomotor symptoms, which routinely runs at 30-50% in menopause trials. No good evidence supports magnesium for night sweats or hot flushes. Magnesium may improve sleep quality in people with low status, which could make night sweats less disruptive, but that is not the same as reducing them.
