- Take with food, consistently. Evidence is mixed, and depends on how anti-ageing is defined. Randomised placebo-controlled trials of oral HA at 120-240 mg/day for 8-12 weeks show fairly consistent improvements in skin hydration and, in some studies, skin elasticity and reduced wrinkle depth - the hydration finding is the most reproducible. Beyond skin, anti-ageing claims have no support: no trial has shown oral HA affects any measure of biological ageing, joint structure over time, or longevity. The absorption question is also relevant - ingested HA is degraded by gut bacteria into smaller fragments and oligosaccharides, and how much reaches the skin intact is debated, though the clinical hydration results suggest something works.

Caveats
Anti-ageing is not a measurable clinical endpoint - judge oral HA by skin hydration, which is what the trials actually measured. What has genuine evidence for skin ageing is daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, not smoking, and topical retinoids. Safety: oral hyaluronic acid is well tolerated in trials at 120-240 mg/day over months, with no consistent adverse effects, but there is no established upper intake level and no long-term safety data beyond about a year. Most products are produced by bacterial fermentation, though some are derived from rooster comb - avoid the latter with egg or poultry allergy. Because HA is involved in tissue growth and angiogenesis, and CD44 receptor signalling is implicated in tumour behaviour, avoid oral HA in active cancer without oncology advice. No safety data in pregnancy or breastfeeding - avoid in both. Injectable HA fillers are an entirely separate matter with their own risks and should only be administered by qualified practitioners.
