Overview
Dihydroberberine (DHB) is berberine that has been chemically reduced, a trick borrowed from gut microbiology: intestinal bacteria convert berberine to dihydroberberine for absorption, then it re-oxidizes back to berberine in the bloodstream. Supplementing DHB directly bypasses this bottleneck. A pharmacokinetic study found DHB achieves about 5x the plasma berberine AUC of an equal berberine dose, allowing lower doses (100-200 mg vs 500 mg) with less GI distress. However, the decades of berberine RCTs on glucose and lipids do not automatically transfer; DHB-specific human outcome trials are still sparse. It is a reasonable berberine alternative, not a proven upgrade.
