Its constituents include 4-hydroxyisoleucine, an unusual amino acid that stimulates glucose-dependent insulin secretion, soluble galactomannan fibre, and steroidal saponins that underpin the hormonal claims.
Three research threads exist and they use quite different preparations. For glucose control, whole or defatted seed powder at 5-10 g/day has reduced fasting glucose and HbA1c in a number of small trials, plausibly through both 4-hydroxyisoleucine and the viscous fibre slowing carbohydrate absorption. For hormonal and libido effects, standardised saponin extracts such as Testofen or Furosap at 500-600 mg/day have shown improved sexual function, mood and, in some trials, free testosterone — though results are inconsistent and several industry-funded studies dominate. Effects on libido appear more reliable than effects on total testosterone.
Fenugreek is also a traditional galactagogue, and small trials support modest increases in breast milk volume. Practically, two things surprise users: a strong maple-syrup body and urine odour from sotolon, and cross-reactivity with peanut and chickpea allergy since it is a legume.

Potential Side Effects
A maple-syrup odour in urine and sweat from sotolon is near universal and harmless. Gastrointestinal upset, diarrhoea and gas are common at seed-powder doses. Allergic reactions occur in people sensitised to other legumes.
Contraindications
Avoid in pregnancy because of uterine stimulant effects and traditional use to induce labour. Avoid with legume allergies given cross-reactivity with peanut and chickpea.
Drug Interactions
