Digestive Enzymes for Heartburn Relief
Digestive enzymes can reduce post-meal fullness and pressure that provoke reflux, but they do not treat acid exposure directly.
Overview
Verdict
Helps when fullness and slow digestion drive the reflux.
How It Works
Dosing & Protocol
Typical dose
- Recommended dose
- No standard dose for heartburn; blends supplying roughly 10,000-30,000 USP lipase and protease per meal have been used, with limited and mixed results
- Expected timeframe
- Same-meal effect if any; judge over 2-4 weeks
Protocol
- dose
- Not well established for heartburn (blends of ~10,000-30,000 USP lipase/protease per meal have been trialled)
- form
- Broad-spectrum enzyme capsule
- steps
- Evidence is limited and mixed: enzymes speed gastric emptying of fatty meals in some studies, but no good trial shows reliable heartburn relief,Where enzymes seem to help, it is usually a meal that was fatty or oversized — smaller, lower-fat meals achieve the same thing,Do not take betaine HCl alongside for reflux without clinician guidance; added acid can worsen symptoms and is dangerous with ulcers or on a PPI,Seek assessment for alarm features: difficulty swallowing, weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools or anaemia,If a 2-4 week trial changes nothing, stop and pursue a diagnosis
- timing
- With the first bites of a meal if trialled
- duration
- 2-4 week trial only
Evidence
What the studies say
No studies are yet linked to both Digestive Enzymes and Heartburn Relief.
Safety
Caveats
Mixed, limited evidence. Enzymes do not treat erosive oesophagitis and must not replace prescribed PPI therapy. Avoid combining with betaine HCl in reflux, ulcer disease or while on acid suppression. Pancreatin products can cause nausea and cramping; pork-derived pancreatin matters for dietary and allergy reasons.
