    Collagen (Hydrolyzed) for Wrinkle Reduction

    Oral collagen produces small but reproducible improvements in wrinkle depth.

    Overview

    Hydrolyzed collagen is one of the few oral supplements with meta-analytic support for a visible skin endpoint. Pooling randomised trials in over a thousand participants, supplementation significantly improved skin hydration and elasticity versus placebo, with favourable effects on wrinkle depth.
    The honest framing is that hydration and elasticity are the robust findings, and wrinkle depth is the softer one. Wrinkle measurement varies widely across trials, and many were funded by collagen manufacturers, which shifts the expected effect size downward. What you can reasonably expect after two to three months at 2.5 to 10 g daily is skin that measures better hydrated and more elastic, with fine lines somewhat less pronounced. It is not a substitute for sun protection or topical retinoids.

    How It Works

    Hydrolyzed collagen is digested into di- and tripeptides, notably prolyl-hydroxyproline, which survive absorption and appear intact in blood. These peptides are the plausible active agents rather than the amino acids themselves.
    In laboratory work those peptides act as signalling molecules on dermal fibroblasts, increasing production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. More hyaluronic acid explains the hydration finding, and new collagen and elastin explain the elasticity finding. Dermal remodelling is slow. Trials generally measure at eight to twelve weeks because that is roughly how long the dermis takes to show a measurable change, and gains fade over a similar period after stopping.

    Safety
