    What the studies say

    A small dGEMRIC MRI trial reported increased cartilage proteoglycan after 24 weeks, supported by animal models. Sample sizes are tiny, follow-up is short, and structural change has not been linked to durable clinical outcomes.

    Caveats

    Verdict is mixed: MRI trials of cartilage thickness are largely negative, while symptom trials are modestly positive — so the honest claim is symptom relief, not cartilage regrowth. Trials are small and often industry-funded. Collagen does not modify structural osteoarthritis progression. Fish allergy risk with marine sources. Not studied in pregnancy.

    People with advanced bone-on-bone osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid, psoriatic), or mechanical derangement such as a meniscal tear.
