    Overview

    Nails, like hair, are made of keratin rather than collagen, so the direct structural argument does not apply. What makes nails a slightly better case than hair is that the nail matrix sits on a collagen-rich bed and that nail growth is faster and easier to measure objectively.
    Brittle nail syndrome - splitting, peeling, ridging and slow growth - affects a substantial minority of adults, more commonly women, and is often driven by repeated wetting and drying, detergent exposure and nail products rather than by any nutritional deficit. Collagen is one of the few oral options with any published data specifically on nails, which is more than can be said for its hair claims. The data is still small and largely open-label.

    How It Works

    The nail plate is produced by the nail matrix, a germinal epithelium sitting on a dermal bed dense in type I collagen with a rich microvascular supply. The quality of that bed determines the environment in which the matrix works.
    Collagen peptides absorbed as prolyl-hydroxyproline reach the dermis and stimulate fibroblast activity and matrix production, which is the proposed route to a better-supported and better-perfused nail matrix. Amino acid supply may contribute, though collagen is low in the cysteine that keratin disulphide bonds require. Nail hardness and flexibility also depend heavily on water and lipid content in the plate itself - a physical property that no oral supplement controls, and that topical care influences directly.

    Gloves beat supplements

    Repeated wet-dry cycling is the main cause of brittle nails. Wearing gloves for washing up and cleaning does more than any capsule.

    The published nail literature for collagen peptides is limited to a small number of studies, most notably an open-label trial reporting increased nail growth rate and reduced breakage frequency over 24 weeks of daily collagen supplementation. That design carries obvious weaknesses: no placebo group, self-reported breakage counts, a small sample and industry involvement. Nails also improve seasonally and with reduced chemical exposure, so uncontrolled improvement is difficult to attribute. Biotin, the other common nail supplement, has similarly weak evidence outside of frank deficiency.

    Open-label means uncertain

    Without a placebo group, improvement over six months could reflect expectation, seasonal change or altered nail care rather than the supplement.

    Safety

    Hydrolysed collagen is well tolerated, with occasional bloating, fullness or taste aversion the usual complaints.

    Nail changes can signal disease

    Spoon-shaped nails, clubbing, dark streaks, pitting or sudden colour change need medical assessment - they can indicate anaemia, thyroid disease, psoriasis or melanoma.

    Marine collagen is unsuitable for anyone with a fish or shellfish allergy, and bovine sources may not meet dietary or religious requirements. Collagen is an incomplete protein and should be additional to, not a substitute for, adequate dietary protein.
