    L-Citrulline for Pump Enhancement

    Citrulline is the best-supported pump supplement, and it also modestly improves training volume.

    Overview

    L-citrulline is the most effective oral route to raising plasma arginine and, downstream, nitric oxide. That vasodilation is what lifters experience as the training "pump" — greater blood volume and metabolite delivery in working muscle.

    Citrulline malate, the 2:1 form used in most trials, also shows benefits for training volume and next-day soreness, which makes it more than a cosmetic effect.

    How it works

    Oral arginine is largely destroyed by intestinal and hepatic arginase before it reaches circulation. Citrulline bypasses that first-pass metabolism, is converted to arginine in the kidneys, and therefore raises plasma arginine more effectively than arginine itself.

    Higher arginine availability feeds endothelial nitric oxide synthase, relaxing vascular smooth muscle and increasing muscle perfusion. The malate component may additionally support the TCA cycle and ammonia clearance during hard sets.

    Stacking

    Safety

    Safety profile

    Citrulline is well tolerated. The main side effect at 8 g is mild gastrointestinal discomfort, more often attributed to the malate component than to citrulline itself.

    Blood-pressure medication

    Because citrulline is a vasodilator, it can add to the effect of antihypertensives. Monitor for lightheadedness.
