TL;DR
The pump is transient blood and fluid accumulation in working muscle. Citrulline and adequate hydration reliably increase it — but a bigger pump is a sensation, not proof of a better workout.
Why It Matters
Exercise-induced hyperaemia comes from nitric oxide-mediated vasodilation, metabolite accumulation and osmotic fluid shift into muscle cells. Cell swelling may contribute modestly to hypertrophy signalling, but the evidence that pump magnitude predicts long-term growth is weak. Mechanical tension and progressive overload remain the primary drivers. Note that pump-enhancing agents are vasoactive and can lower blood pressure or interact with nitrates.
