    Overview

    Bacopa monnieri, known as brahmi in Ayurvedic practice, is a creeping marsh herb used for centuries as a memory tonic. Its active constituents are the bacosides, triterpenoid saponins that standardised extracts typically deliver at 45-55 per cent of the total.

    Bacopa has an unusually solid human evidence base for a nootropic herb. Multiple randomised, placebo-controlled trials and at least two meta-analyses converge on the same finding: 300 mg daily of a standardised extract for 12 weeks improves delayed word recall and shortens choice reaction time in healthy adults. The effect sizes are small to moderate, and the clearest signal is in memory acquisition and retention rather than attention or executive function. Some trials also report reduced anxiety scores, consistent with a mild adaptogenic effect.

    The critical practical point is time course. Bacopa does not work acutely — single-dose studies find nothing, and benefit generally appears between weeks 8 and 12. People who take it for two weeks and stop have not given it a fair trial. Gastrointestinal upset is the main tolerability issue and is largely solved by taking it with food.
