Bacopa Monnieri for Neuroprotection
Bacopa shows neuroprotective activity in animal models, but no human trial has tested protection against neurodegeneration.

How It Works
Dosing & Protocol
Typical dose
- Recommended dose
- No established dose for neuroprotection; cognition trials used 300-450 mg/day
- Expected timeframe
- Not established
Protocol
- studied dose
- 300-450 mg/day of extract standardised to 50% bacosides in the human trials, which measured short-term cognitive performance only
- evidence note
- Verdict is insufficient - the neuroprotection case is preclinical
- what happened
- Preclinical evidence for antioxidant, anti-amyloid and neuronal protective effects is broad and reasonably consistent, but human data cover only short-term cognitive performance in healthy adults - no trial has measured dementia incidence, brain imaging or disease progression
- better evidenced
- Blood pressure control, exercise, hearing correction and sleep have far stronger neuroprotection evidence
- if you still trial it
- 300 mg/day with a fat-containing meal for 12 weeks, judged on a delayed recall test rather than on animal mechanism
Evidence
What the studies say
No studies are yet linked to both Bacopa Monnieri and Neuroprotection.
Safety
Caveats
Extrapolating rodent neuroprotection to human disease prevention has repeatedly failed - treat this as unproven. Gastrointestinal upset is common; take with food. Cholinergic activity means caution with anticholinergics, cholinesterase inhibitors, and in bradycardia, asthma and peptic ulcer disease. May raise thyroid hormones. Long-term safety beyond 12 months is not established. Not established as safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding - avoid.
