    Bacopa Monnieri for Stress Resilience

Bacopa reduced anxiety and cortisol in a few small trials, though it is far better characterised as a memory herb than an adaptogen.

    How It Works

Bacopa modulates serotonergic and GABAergic signalling and has been shown to lower cortisol reactivity in acute stress paradigms.

    Dosing & Protocol

    Typical dose

    Recommended dose
300-320 mg/day of extract standardised to 50% bacosides, with food

    Protocol

    form
Extract standardised to 50% bacosides (BacoMind in the stress trial)
    timing
With food containing fat; evening if it makes you drowsy
    framing
Stress reduction was a secondary finding in cognition trials, not the primary endpoint
    duration
    8-12 weeks
    titration
320 mg was the dose in the multitasking-stress trial; do not exceed 450 mg/day

Perceived Stress Scale at baseline and week 12
    starting dose
300 mg standardised extract daily with a fat-containing meal

    Evidence

    What the studies say

A multitasking-stress trial reported reduced cortisol and improved mood at 320 mg, and chronic trials note secondary anxiety reductions. Stress outcomes are almost always secondary endpoints, not primary ones.

    Safety

    Caveats

The cortisol and mood findings come from a single acute multitasking trial plus secondary outcomes in cognition studies - stress resilience has not been a primary endpoint. Better-evidenced options exist for stress specifically. Gastrointestinal upset is common; take with food. Cholinergic activity means caution with anticholinergics, cholinesterase inhibitors, and in bradycardia, asthma and peptic ulcer disease. May raise thyroid hormones. Sedating for some. Not established as safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding - avoid.

    Less likely to help if

People with an anxiety disorder needing treatment, and those whose stress load is structural rather than physiological.
