Gut microbiome support means feeding a diverse, fibre-fermenting community that produces short-chain fatty acids. Dietary plant diversity outperforms any single supplement.
Why It Matters
The gut microbiome influences far more than digestion. Fermentation of fibre produces short-chain fatty acids — principally butyrate, propionate and acetate — that fuel colonocytes, strengthen the intestinal barrier, induce regulatory T cells and modulate systemic inflammation. Butyrate alone supplies most of the energy used by the colonic epithelium. Diversity is the single most consistent marker of a healthy microbiome across studies. Reduced diversity is associated with inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and depression, though causality runs in both directions and remains partly unresolved. The American Gut Project found that people eating more than thirty different plant species weekly had markedly greater microbial diversity than those eating fewer than ten — a more powerful lever than any supplement currently available. Supplements have a supporting role. Specific probiotic strains have strain-specific evidence for particular endpoints, prebiotic fibres such as inulin, GOS and partially hydrolysed guar gum feed existing beneficial populations, and psyllium supports the barrier while being only lightly fermented. Testing is largely unhelpful outside research: consumer microbiome sequencing cannot yet generate reliable individual recommendations.
How to Measure
Practical self-assessment beats sequencing. Track weekly plant diversity, stool form on the Bristol scale, and transit time using a food marker. Faecal calprotectin is a validated clinical test for intestinal inflammation. Consumer microbiome sequencing reports diversity and composition but cannot currently produce reliable personalised recommendations, and results vary substantially between providers.

Supporting Supplements
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus
LGG transiently colonizes and shifts function while you take it, but it does not durably reshape the microbiome.
Probiotics
Probiotics transiently increase microbial diversity and functional output while being taken; durable colonisation generally does not occur.
GOS
One of the few supplements where the microbiome effect is genuinely reproducible. Whether that translates to how you feel is a separate question.
Psyllium Husk
Psyllium is only modestly fermentable, so microbiome effects are smaller than with prebiotic fibres like inulin.
Berberine
Berberine measurably reshapes gut microbial composition, but whether those shifts are beneficial or simply antimicrobial pressure is unresolved.
FOS
If your goal is measurably shifting the microbiome toward Bifidobacteria, FOS does it cheaply and predictably. The catch is gas, and IBS sufferers often cannot tolerate it.
